German (deutsche sprache) is an official language in Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Belgium, and one of the official working languages of the European Union. It is one of the most widespread spoken languages with more than 90 million people speaking it worldwide. It must be remembered that German itself is has various forms. It is divided into three groups of dialects: low German, high German and the south German dialects.
Even though German is not an official language at the UN or NATO, it does have formal status in many international sporting organisations: FIFA, UEFA, FIBA, FIG, FIS and others.
It is interesting that along with German in the Germanic group of languages we find such “exotic” languages as Afrikaans, Yiddish and Icelandic.
