Italian (lingua italiana) is an official language in Italy, the Vatican City State, San Marino, Switzerland and some districts in Croatia and Slovenia. Throughout the world around 65 million people speak Italian. A curious but little known fact is that Italian is the second most widespread language in ... Argentina.
For a long time Italy was made up of a number of disparate states, each of which had its own dialect, and these dialects were therefore closer to independents languages than a modified version of the Italian language. The most correct dialect in Italy, so far as grammar is concerned, is that found in Toscana. This is not by chance. It is here that Dante was born, so the local dialect is the language of the "Divine Comedy".
Italian culture has had an enormous influence on the arts and sciences. In music, for example, Italian is the dominant language. Many terms, such as “maestro”, “orchestra”, “fortepiano”, “mezzo” and “solfeggio” have been adopted from Italian.
